Description

The Pura Belpré Papers are an important source for the study of Puerto Rican children's literature and Puerto Rican folk tales and legends. They are also valuable for examining relationships between the Puerto Rican community and a major institution such as the New York Public Library.

The materials in this collection also document the formation and organizational development of the Puerto Rican community in New York City.

The materials include personal documents, financial statements from publishers, correspondence, manuscripts, flyers, clippings, photographs, and illustrations. The Papers span the years from 1896 to 1985, but the bulk of them ranges from 1950-1970s.
